We will go through the ECRCAA Modified Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba/Province of Manitoba SAFE Work Student Program and will learn about the rights and responsibilities of workers and employers, hazard recognition and control, the impact of unsafe work practices, fire safety and injury prevention. We will also learn about employment standards in the Province of Manitoba. Students will also receive a basic WHMIS training certificate as well as a CPR/First aid certificate. Week Two - Goal-Setting and Skill Identification During Week Two we will be using “A Dream That Walks” goal-setting workbook, which will help you understand your goals for the future and how to make those goals a reality. We will spend time on the EYEE program’s goal setting and skill identification workbook and visit the Career Cruising website. The website will help you decide which careers may be of interest to you. Week Three - The Job Search During week three we use the “Job Power: Master the Job Search” workbook, which teaches students the best methods to search for employment. These methods include the Service Canada’s Canada Job Bank, the classifieds, the yellow pages, cold calls to employers, networking for job leads and accessing the hidden job market. Week four introduces students to the concept of resume writing with the EYEE Program’s Resume Workbook and the “Job Power: Master the Job Search” workbook. Special attention will be on the importance of having the best resume style for the skills and experience you have, as well as adapting that resume to the position that you are applying for. Week Five - Written Communication and Applications The focus of week five will be writing cover letters, as well as other job search tools including calling cards and how to fill-out job applications. Students will also learn the proper way to edit their work and improve their writing ability.
Week Six - Interview Skills Week six covers everything from how to answer difficult questions to how to dress for the interview. This will include a mock interview and a videotaped copy will be given the student to see how they can improve. Week Seven - Problem Solving/Conflict Resolution Students will learn how to handle conflicts in the workplace in a professional manner. They will role-play examples of workplace conflicts and learn how to deal with conflict not only at work, but also in their lives outside of work. Week Eight - Positive Life Choices The focus of week eight will be the importance of positive life choices and exploring how the day-to-day decisions that we make can have a serious impact on the our professional life. Topics of discussion will include on drug awareness, positive thinking, building self-esteem, coping with stress and a variety of other topics about health and self-care. We will also spend time on the “Stress Management: Self-Care Handbook.” Week Nine - Budgeting Students will work on the EYEE program’s money management workbook and learn to prepare and live on a budget. We will also keep track of our spending habits over the course of the month using “The Budget Kit” workbook. We will then learn about Microsoft Excel and use that to create a computer version of our monthly budgets.
During the last seven weeks students will be given a work placement where they will receive on-the-job training at a business that matches their career goals. This will give the students work experience for their resumé, and hopefully lead to employment after graduation. EYEE is always looking for employers who are willing to provide a 7 week work placement where program participants can gain on-the-job training, employability skills and confidence in the workforce. Ideally upon completion, the participant would attain employment with that employer.
Partnering with EYEE benefits both your organization and the participant. As an organization you have the opportunity to make a positive impact on your community and hire a trained employee. The EYEE participant’s wage is covered for the entire 7 week placement.
