The Elmwood Lighthouse Project is an Initiative of the Elmwood Community Resource Centre & Area Association (ECRCAA) and the Elmwood Lighthouses Steering Committee designed to focus on the following community goals:

·        To provide youth with life skills to build a positive future for themselves

·         To provide youth with employable skills so that they may acquire higher paying positions

·        To improve community perceptions of Elmwood youth

·       To strengthen relationships in the community between youth to youth, youth to adult and youth to seniors

·       To provide Elmwood youth with a sense of cultural identity and an awareness of other youths' cultural identity

The Elmwood Lighthouse (EL) began operations in October 2004. With a grant from the provincial government, Elmwood Lighthouse was initiated. The purpose was to provide our youth with a variety of positive options. Through community partnerships, consultations with our youth, and the hard work of the Elmwood Lighthouse Steering Committee, EL has become a reality.

EL is proud to offer the following programs to our youth.

  • Gym ClubHave a lot of energy and nothing to do with it? Need to work off some steam? Or do you just want to get some exercise and have some fun? Elmwood Community Resource Centre is offering a Gym Club program for kids attending the River Elm School.

  • Computer Drop-InComputer Drop-In is an after-school program available at 200 Levis and at the Keenleyside Resource Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00pm to 6:45pm, for kids 6 to 16 years old. Here they can come to use computers, play board games and have a snack in a safe and positive environment.

  • Girlz Club:  Girlz Club is offered at the Keenleyside Resource Centre and is a place for girls to have fun and learn something new. It is a place where the girls of this community gather and meet new people and get peer support. If they are having problems, or looking for answers to questions, they can talk to another girl or the Girlz Club leader.

We hope that they will feel that Girlz Club is a safe place to talk, learn, and experience new things. We do this by addressing issues that girls today need to know about. We also teach girls new skills through doing hands-on activities.

Some activities we do at Girlz Club are:

    • Nail art
    • Henna
    • Movie nights
    • Crafts
    • Creative journaling
    • Karaoke
    • Guest Speakers

    Things That We Talk About:

    • Self-esteem
    • Safety
    • Self-image
    • Friendship
    • Healthy relationships
    • Sexuality
    • Problem solving
    • and other issues

Come Join us! Tuesdays from 4:00pm until 5:00pm, if you are a girl 10-16 years old.

We try to keep the boys busy in this program; here too we use recyclable materials for making crafts and other activities with participants.

Whether it be Boys, Girls, or Computer Drop in held at 75 Brazier Street, we provide  healthy snacks for all the kids. The Boys Club is offered at the Keenleyside Resource Centre.
