Neighbourhood Immigrant Settlement Program

NIS Outreach Project/Services          Media         Photo Gallery

The Neighbourhood Immigrant Settlement (NIS) program at Elmwood Community Resource Centre and Area Association was established to support immigrant and refugee families in the Elmwood area, through home visits with families, office visits with individuals, and through community outreach.

The NIS worker also attends meetings with other service providers in Elmwood and city-wide to discuss immigrant- and refugee-specific services and programs, to provide accurate and specific referrals to clients in Elmwood.

Elmwood Cultural Celebration

Once a year the NISW program plays host to the Elmwood Cultural Celebration. The purpose of the event is to engage our neighbourhood with an opportunity to gather in community for a meal, enjoy entertainment and craft-making with children.

Neighbourhood Immigrant Settlement Outreach Project

Elmwood Community is home to more than 17,000 people of various ages, rich culture and diverse languages. Approximately 15% of this population is immigrants and refugees - people who have left their countries to make a livelihood for their families in the Elmwood community.  In 2007 the Neighbourhood Immigrant Settlement Program was established to support these families in the Elmwood area.

For many newcomers, both Canadian-born and foreign-born, settling in a new city can be challenging though very rewarding. The community’s Neighbourhood Immigrant Settlement Worker (NISW) is available to facilitate connecting newcomers to the services and agencies they need!
